The 8 champions and their crews taking part in this year's edition of the Trophe Clairefontaine took possession of their boats and carried out their first test and training session, inside Port America's Cup Port in Valencia. Wind conditions during the training session could be defined as acceptable. Throughout the morning, a constant and quite strong breeze was blowing throughout the America's Cup race course as well as inside Port America's Cup. Unfortunately, training started a little bit late, we suppose later than what was initially planned. The 8 boats docked out past 5:30pm and at that time the thermal breeze usually has already started to die down and there the was probably 6-7 knots of wind. There is no doubt that racing will be spectacular once the breeze kicks in. One shouldn't forget that the race course is right inside the basin and yachts have to sail two legs (one upwind and one downwind) inside the canal, meaning that at times they get extremely close to its edges, as seen in the photos. Let's say, I could have almost grabbed Ed Baird's helm if I wanted!! read more »
Alinghi's media day included a very instructional experience on the water. Not only were we able to watch the team's two Extreme 40 yachts train against each other we were also given the opportunity to hop onboard and witness the races from a privileged position.
The white boat was crewed by Ed Baird, Lorenzo Mazza, Rodney Ardern and Pieter Van Nieuwenhuyzen while on the black one by Murray Jones, Brad Butterworth, Nils Frei and Yves Detrey.
Ed Baird won all 5 of the exhibition match races but of course these results should be taken with a pinch of salt. They did in fact simulate a Deed-of-Gift match, with just one upwind and one downwind leg but the course was set very short, just 1 mile, in order to squeeze as many races as possible for the numerous guests. With such a short distance the two teams tacked and gybed once or twice in each leg, amplifying by much the importance of the start. Of course, one should always keep in mind that Baird is one of the most experienced and successful match-racers in the world, twice claiming the top position on world rankings. read more »
Stating that conditions on the opening day of the Puerto Calero RC44 Gold Cup were ideal would be a major understatement. Add to that a fleet of racing machines and world-class crews and you get some spectacular races.
Valencia Sailing was aboard two RC44 yachts - Banco Espirito Santo and Artemis - today and shot, as much as possible, the action on these sailing thoroughbreds. It was tough at times to just hold on with one hand and shooting with the other. The RC44's are narrow, heel as hell and have no rail and when you are in prestart procedure with Dean Barker at the helm against Larry Ellison and Russel Coutts on the other yacht the last thing you worry about is holding the camera still.
I was onboard Banco Espirito Santo and Artemis when each boat raced Team Aqua, helmed by Cameron Appleton, and BMW Oracle. Unfortunately, the last race - Artemis against BMW Oracle - took place under 25 knots of wind and choppy seas so it was a choice between filming or not falling overboard, so I chose the latter. read more »
Mutua Madrilea undisputed leader with two bullets in as many races; 7 points ahead of Quantum Platoon shows consistency and scores two thirds Bribn get their act together while Artemis disappoints It was another tricky day on the Lanzarotean waters for the 14 crews taking part in the TP52 World Championship Islas Canarias Puerto Calero. The race committee had to move the starting line a mile further offshore, trying to get a better breeze but had to fire the gun with no more than 7 knots of a northeasterly. There was no shortage of challenges for the tacticians today, albeit less than yesterday, but for Mutua Madrilea it was another day in the office. Vasco Vascottos team with 3 victories in 5 races is now leading the championship, 7 points clear of second placed Quantum Racing. Artemis is still third overall but their performance today was far from what one would have expected, scoring an 11th and a 13th. The days first race was a one way victory for Vasco Vascottos Mutua Madrilea that sailed as close to perfection as possible. Favini, in concert with Bruni on tactics and Vascotto, took control of the situation with a clean start at the pin end and from there on stayed on top of the fleet until they crossed the finish line. Together with Bribn and Synergy they opted for the left side of the course and stuck to it. Dean Barker on the helm of Bribn was constantly putting pressure on the Italians but was unable to make them relinquish leadership. read more »
[Source: AUDI Medcup] One year ago this week Terry Hutchinson (USA) was a key member of the Emirates Team New Zealand crew which had only just narrowly lost the 32nd Americas Cup match against Alinghi. Today off the Sardinian capital of Cagliari, Hutchinson and his team aboard Quantum Racing (USA) won a regatta of the 2008 Audi MedCup Circuit for the first time, lifting the Audi Region of Sardinia Trophy. Quantum finished third in Alicante in May and fifth in Marseille last month and now, at the theoretical mid-point of the six regatta season, after 26 races the American boat tops the Audi MedCup Circuit 2008 standings. A great, but intense final day of racing took full advantage of the continuing Mistral winds, blowing between 13-17 knots. An early morning start allowed three sharp windward-leeward to be completed by early afternoon. It was only on the final run of the final race that Hutchinson and the Quantum Racing crew did just enough to beat Mean Machine (MON), Peter de Ridders 2006 champion team, who are guided tactically by Hutchinsons former key crew-mates ETNZ tactician Ray Davies (NZL), along with navigator Kevin Hall (USA). At the final windward mark of the regattas deciding 10th race, Quantum Racing and Mean Machine sat locked together on the same points aggregate, and only by passing Spains Americas Cup Team on El Desafio and Matador (ARG) did Quantum Racing emerge triumphant by two clear points. With Hutchinson steering, Morgan Larson (USA) as tactician and Athens Olympian Mark Mendelblatt (USA) helping out for the first time as strategist and guestgrinder, Quantum Racing won four of the 10 races and never finished worse than sixth. read more »
During the last couple of days we have been closely following BMW Oracle's training sessions aboard the Extreme 40 catamaran. Yesterday (Monday) James Spithill was not on the helm but instead the camera of our friend and excellent Valencian photographer Ignacio Baixauli spotted a new face.
There has been a rumor BMW Oracle was looking for a second helmsman but we take it with a pinch of salt. Whatever the case, the American team seems not to be wasting any time and trains every day and from what we see I don't think there should be any doubt about what the 33rd America's Cup will look like.
Can you recognize BMW Oracle's sailors?
Still, another "waiting" week started yesterday and Justice Cahn could make his order public any moment. It would be really funny if he did it on Saint Valentine's day. I'm sure quite a few people won't love him at all. read more »
