Alinghi resumes sailing aboard Extreme 40 catamarans

At around 2pm on Friday afternoon, Alinghi went back to water onboard its two Extreme 40 catamarans that sported the team's colors and logos. After a pause of several days, the Defender of the 33rd America's Cup took its black and white catamarans for a test sail off Valencia's coast.

Although it was a gorgeous day for tourists, with clear blue skies and spring-like temperatures, most probably Alinghi's crew didn't enjoy the most ideal sailing conditions. As one can easily see on the photos, I doubt whether wind speed went over 1-2 knots.

According to the Alinghi website, the team will start training from tomorrow. In addition, always according to the website, on board the white X40 were designers Jean Claude Monnin and Pierre Yves Jorand, and sailors Murray Jones, Nils Frei and Juan Vila. On board the black boat were designers Dirk Kramers, Daniele Constantini and Luc Dubois, and sailors Yves Detrey and Piet van Nieuwenhuyzen.  read more »

First training session of the Trophe Clairefontaine

The 8 champions and their crews taking part in this year's edition of the Trophe Clairefontaine took possession of their boats and carried out their first test and training session, inside Port America's Cup Port in Valencia. Wind conditions during the training session could be defined as acceptable. Throughout the morning, a constant and quite strong breeze was blowing throughout the America's Cup race course as well as inside Port America's Cup. Unfortunately, training started a little bit late, we suppose later than what was initially planned. The 8 boats docked out past 5:30pm and at that time the thermal breeze usually has already started to die down and there the was probably 6-7 knots of wind. There is no doubt that racing will be spectacular once the breeze kicks in. One shouldn't forget that the race course is right inside the basin and yachts have to sail two legs (one upwind and one downwind) inside the canal, meaning that at times they get extremely close to its edges, as seen in the photos. Let's say, I could have almost grabbed Ed Baird's helm if I wanted!!  read more »

Sailing aboard Alinghi's Extreme 40 catamaran

Alinghi's media day included a very instructional experience on the water. Not only were we able to watch the team's two Extreme 40 yachts train against each other we were also given the opportunity to hop onboard and witness the races from a privileged position.

The white boat was crewed by Ed Baird, Lorenzo Mazza, Rodney Ardern and Pieter Van Nieuwenhuyzen while on the black one by Murray Jones, Brad Butterworth, Nils Frei and Yves Detrey.

Ed Baird won all 5 of the exhibition match races but of course these results should be taken with a pinch of salt. They did in fact simulate a Deed-of-Gift match, with just one upwind and one downwind leg but the course was set very short, just 1 mile, in order to squeeze as many races as possible for the numerous guests. With such a short distance the two teams tacked and gybed once or twice in each leg, amplifying by much the importance of the start. Of course, one should always keep in mind that Baird is one of the most experienced and successful match-racers in the world, twice claiming the top position on world rankings.  read more »

Press reports: Alinghi to hold 33rd AC match in Valencia in 2009 in exchange for 50 million euros

Valencia's main newspaper, Las Provincias published on Monday morning an interesting article concerning the ongoing negotiations between Ernesto Bertarelli and the city of Valencia, regarding the possibility of holding the 33rd America's Cup match here. According to the article Bertarelli had a very busy week in Valencia, not only training aboard Alinghi's catamaran but also negotiating with city officials.

The newspaper claims that according to reliable information it seems that talks are proceeding well and a final agreement shouldn't be too far. Las Provincias is of a mainly right-wing orientation and as such it enjoys close relations to the local and regional governments. As a result, we believe that the article's sources, presumably within these two authorities, are reliable.  read more »

Ernesto Bertarelli talks about the America's Cup

Our friends from the excellent Italian sailing website Zero Gradi Nord have published an exclusive video interview with Ernesto Bertarelli, Alinghi's owner, regarding the America's Cup. The Swiss yachtsman was in Porto Cervo, Sardinia where he won Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in the Mini Maxi division with a comfortable margin, scoring 4 bullets in 6 races. Bertarelli has chartered the 66ft yacht Numbers and raced with a crew almost entirely of Alinghi team members. Bertarelli talked to the Italian media present in the regatta for about 30 minutes covering most aspects of the America's Cup. The interview was in Italian and for the convenience of our non-Italian readers we publish the translation. Note: The translation is mine and hopefully as reliable as possible. Although I consider myself very fluent in Dante's language a few errors might have slipped in, especially when at moments Bertarelli's voice was silenced by the noises of forks and knives. Be patient, the article is long... Ernesto Bertarelli talks to the Italian media. Port Cervo, 6 September 2008. Video copyright Zero Gradi Nord Question: Given the latest court decision in favor of Alinghi, are you thinking about a multi-challenger Americas Cup? Ernesto Bertarelli: You could think about organizing an Americas Cup next year with multiple challengers but even if you consider there is a very small percentage the court might rule and decide that Cup doesn't count it is not feasible. We are currently in the same situation we have been for some time now, waiting. Question: Is there still room for diplomacy in the duel between Alinghi and BMW Oracle? Ernesto Bertarelli: We have been using diplomacy for a year now. I think we committed an error in July 2007. We should have taken the scheduled 3-week holidays immediately after winning the America's Cup. The other big error we made was that instead of putting the documents on the table, we should have first presented our vision, the reason of existence of the new Protocol. We made a mistake and didn't do these two things. Yet, what we did from July until November was to sit with the Challengers, always inviting BMW Oracle, and made 13 modifications to the Protocol. We also let the Challengers, without our presence, take a decision on the new boat rule. We then agreed on the regatta format. During these 3-4 meetings the Americans always refused to attend and instead decided to go ahead with their litigation to Justice Cahn. After they won the case with Justice Cahn we once again sat with them and told them, "very well, you won, let's now work this out and find a solution to go out of the court and on the water for a multihull race". They refused a solution that would have given us the time to build a boat. We couldn't accept a regatta where they would have ready a 90ft catamaran while we only had a Version 5 ACC yacht or a 40ft catamaran. This is why we appealed because we had made a proposal and they refused. Can we talk about diplomacy when one party doesn't want to give in, or better said when one party takes a step ahead but the other party always takes a step back?  read more »

BMW Oracle's Tom Ehman and Manolo Ruiz de Elvira talk in Valencia's yacht club

It was interesting but it wasn't what we were expecting or what we would have liked to listen or see. This pretty much sums up Friday night's presentation by Tom Ehman, head of external affairs, and Manolo Ruiz de Elvira, senior designer, at the premises of Valencia's yacht club. The two men from America's Cup Challenger of Record BMW Oracle talked to an audience of around 40 people on the America's Cup for about an hour and a half, touching almost all aspects of the world's oldest sports competition, ranging from its history to the most recent legal issues and the current state of affairs of their own team.  read more »
