Tom Sharp happened to call me just as I was approaching Bellingham. I had mentioned to him that I would be heading to the San Juans for the weekend. We decided to meet in Washington Park in Anacortes and go paddling from there. We made the trip up as we went along, taking into account the currents and prepared to camp out, but not committing to anything until we saw how busy the campgrounds were. I suggested we paddle clockwise around Cypress Island. It didn't seem to matter to Tom where we went I think because he had paddled around all of the islands this summer already.Tom brought along a Mariner Coaster, borrowed from George Gronseth. Apparently George once had an entire fleet of Mariner Coasters that he would use for his classes, and this was the sole survivor. read more »

I never learn. I can still remember paddling almost non-stop for 11 hours up the West coast, not able to entirely relax the whole day because I'm anxious about what the surf will be like when we land, head down and teeth gritted as we slog into a bit of a headwind, doing the maths and working out I had to keep on taking the same repetitive paddling motion for another 7 hours before I could get off the water. Made by AboardUk, the bag of welded construction has removable straps to fit the deck or the waist as pouch to store safety equipment as flares, spare compass, emergency blankets, basic first aid kit, fire-starters, a telephone battery, knife, money, a length of parachute line, a Led torch, and the few essentials to survive the unimaginable would I fail after a hazardous landing, to find the comfort of the booming music from a nearby beach bar.
