The End or New Beginnings?

"BARRY AND JUSTINE BEING FED UP BY ROB AND THE BOYS IN FJORDLAND"
I never learn. I can still remember paddling almost non-stop for 11 hours up the West coast, not able to entirely relax the whole day because I'm anxious about what the surf will be like when we land, head down and teeth gritted as we slog into a bit of a headwind, doing the maths and working out I had to keep on taking the same repetitive paddling motion for another 7 hours before I could get off the water. I turned to Barry and said, "I don't want to do this again. I've had enough of paddling on a mission".  read more »

Questions and Answers: Pentax Optio W30 Waterproof Camera

I am getting a lot of questions from readers of this blog concerning waterproof cameras and camcorders, camera mounts and paddling photography. I am trying to answer them directly or with the aid of new posts. I apologize for questions which remain without answer. Please keep in mind that my personal experience with digital cameras is limited to Pentax Optio W-line (WP, W10, W30) and Canon DLSR cameras (10D, 40D). My first digital camera was Canon Powershot S40 in a waterpoof case. I also own Canon Optura Xi camcorder and a bullet cam, but I haven't used them much since starting to play with Pentax Optio cameras. Jeff Potter from Out Your Backdoor sent me some questions concerning Pentax Optio W30 camera.  read more »

Deception Pass Dash 2008

Here is a picture of my new kayak. It is the first production kayak I've ever owned. All my others were skin-on-frame or homemade wooden composites. So yeah I actually did make that paradigm shift after all. I think the whole time I was looking for that perfect playful low volume rough water kayak I must have really wanted a fast touring boat. When a friend let me try his Epic Endurance I was so impressed by the comfort, speed and maneuverability that I knew that this was the type of kayak I needed to go farther and faster. Hey if it's good enough for Freya Hoffmeister it must be good enough for me!  read more »

3 Bow Shots from November Sunset Paddling

I really enjoy November paddling in northern Colorado. Evenings can be calm with a glossy water and beautiful sunsets. No mosquitoes! It could be cold with ice on a kayak deck, but this year November is very warm.

I selected these 3 pictures from my paddling tonight on Beaver Pond in Arapaho Bend Natural Area near Fort Collins. Basically, the same “classical” snapshot showing the bow of my Thunderbolt-X kayak. However, I hold the camera, Pentax Optio W30, at different height from eye level to almost fully extended arms over my head. It gave quite different perspective. Of course, the light was changing.

Unfortunately, it was too dark for shooting when some geese, actually, a few hundred of them, tried to land on my head …  read more »
