On the eastern end of the Cape Cod Canal is a small marina, marked on the chart as a harbor of refuge, in Sandwich MA, called appropriately enough, 'The Sandwich Marina'. This little hole is all there is for protection from the Cape Cod Sound - which, I'm told, can be very nasty indeed.
It's not very big, but right nearby is a great seafood store and a pretty good seafood restaurant. They're called 'Sam's Seafood Store' and 'Joe's Seafood Restaurant'.
"But, " you may think to yourself, "how did you get there? When last we heard you were at Point Judith!"
Ah, that is the story you are about to be told.
After I arrived in Point Judith, I set about kyacking about the place. In my travels, I met a lobsterman and while he pulled traps we talked of this and that. He has about 120 traps in the harbor of refuge and works them manually. This day, however, his traps were empty because someone else had emptied them! I would have been pissed off, but he seemed merely miffed. Said it wasn't the first time and probably wouldn't be the last. He also told me there was going to be a lunar eclipse the next morning around 5:10. read more »
You cant get it any better. Have a look at the great shots which photographer Sommerwerck at: Sommerwerck, Maritime Photografie took during a typical race day in Kiel last week. The appetizer here at the front (Christian in typical airborne style) is one of these shots. I think we will see a couple of them in some future magazines and advertising about some fresh products, mens aftershave or whatever. I am glad that I have been one of the fleet. I am not so happy that I did not find myself in one of the shots. read more »

Not much time for a big report as I have to travel a bit. But for the ones who are eagerly waiting here are some more short cuts and photos: OK, Sven won the regatta at the end after 2 very interesting races on the Sunday (8 races in total) with lots of foiling possible due to some nice gusts. Carlo had it in his hand to win but there was a moment when he tried to pass Sven, he got caught in the wash (turbulence) of Svens sail and capsized to windward. Sven won the regatta in typical style. He does the best Veal heel, he has control nearly all the times but with Carlo we have another real good sailor coming. I came 7th out of nine regulars, 10 participants all together which was totally OK for me. Tons of fun and learning from the top guys who are giving tips and encouragement to keep improving. Going to races is important as in every game but some small tricks I have to practise at home. read more »
This weekend saw a lot of dinghy action at Heron Lake. The whole notion of goals seems a bit too Type A for some of the types of sailing I enjoy.
But, there are sails I'd like to take and things I'd like to be part of on the water.
Sailing days ... more than last year, at 22 so far this year I'm about on the same pace as last year.
Race committee ... get people trained, do a more professional job on the Buccaneer Rodeo, get the Sunrise Regatta properly organized and get some out-of-area boats to attend, get RRO certification.
Windshifts ... get better at spotting and using them and shifting gears proactively and properly. Try to get a more instinctive feel for upwind groove and sail trim. Get more fluid on foredeck and spinnaker.
Get some dinghy sailing experience and comfort level. read more »
