Ian Lancaster Fleming was was born in Mayfair, London. Educated at Durnford School, he was Victor Ludorum at Eton College, finding Sandhurst to be uncongenial.
On the eve of World War II, he was recruited by Rear Admiral John Godfrey, Director of Naval Intelligence of the Royal Navy. He was commissioned first as a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve lieutenant, and subsequently promoted to Lieutenant Commander, then Commander.  read more »
